The butterfly crest in Japan, known as Cho Mon (蝶紋), is an iconic family emblem (kamon) representing the soul, elegance, and transformation. Historically, it was most famously adopted by the powerful Taira clan. With over 250 variations, it remains deeply rooted in Japanese heritage. Key Historical Significance The Taira Clan: The swallowtail butterfly (specifically the Agehanochō or "raised-wing butterfly") was the primary symbol of the Taira clan. During the Heian period, Taira no Kiyomori popularised this emblem, and it was widely used by other powerful warrior families asserting descent from the Taira line The Oda and Ikeda Clans: Famous samurai lords such as Oda Nobunaga incorporated the swallowtail butterfly crest. Similarly, the Ikeda clan, who built and lords over the famous Himeji Castle in Hyogo, stamped their distinct butterfly crests directly onto the castle's roof tiles.
