HMS Endeavour was a British Royal Navy research vessel commanded by Lieutenant James Cook on his first voyage of discovery to Tahiti, New Zealand, and Australia from 1768 to 1771. Originally built as a coal carrier named the Earl of Pembroke, the sturdy ship was purchased by the Navy and refitted for scientific and exploratory missions.
